How safe are your beauty treatments?

Vicki Lane

I recently watched a documentary on BBC3 which highlighted how the non-surgical beauty industry isn’t properly regulated and is literally putting peoples lives at risk. Quite frankly it’s terrifying and totally unacceptable. The documentary shows how people are ‘training’ online or via inadequate one or two day courses to carry out invasive/specialist treatments on people’s faces such as non-surgical facelifts, microblading, botox and fillers. Some of these trainees have no prior medical knowledge pertaining to the anatomy of a face, cross infection procedures, sterilisation, needle stick injuries and in a lot of cases none of these important subjects were

covered in the training.

When I retrained as a permanent makeup artist, I was already a qualified Dental Hygienist which means I am educated in the anatomy of the head/neck and I am also fully trained in cross infection, decontamination, sterilising procedures, needle stick injuries and the importance of taking a full medical history and gaining consent to treatments and follow up with a full aftercare service. All of this knowledge is kept up to date with CPD (Continuing Professional Development). I also carried out a course specifically aimed at cross infection control relating to the tattooing profession.

My permanent makeup training was done with Katy Jobbins who has won multiple awards for her training and mentoring. It is a one to one course where many hours are spent learning and practicing and eventually carrying out treatments on models under Katy’s supervision to ensure that you are safe and competent. Katy’s training is ongoing and I am fully supported even after my training.

MP’s stated that getting non-surgical beauty treatments is currently like the ‘Wild West’ and are looking to push through legislation to regulate the industry properly.

Please do your homework when considering having certain treatments done on your face, research their training, ask lots of questions, ask to see their certificate of qualification and insurance and be sure reviews are genuine.
