Microblading is always positive in the right hands

Vicki Lane

As a permanent makeup artist I was interested to read an article in the Daily Mirror last week about a lady who had microblading and 4 years later when it had faded she said it was the worst mistake of her life.

In my opinion there are two reasons why this lady has ended up with eyebrows like this. Firstly the artist has tattooed outside of the natural brow area considerably, leaving this ‘two-tail’ appearance. It should have been explained that unless she committed to a lifetime of removing her natural brow below the tattooed brow, that she would end up with this appearance. Personally, I always try to enhance the natural brow and not to try to do anything too radical to avoid issues like this. Permanent makeup should look natural so that when people look at you, they don’t see an obvious tattoo, just great brows or eyeliner.

The colour of this ladies brow is also odd, this is because of the pigment used. Some pigments fade unevenly over time, brown for example includes blues, reds and yellows. The pigments used in this process need to be of the highest quality so that the colour stays true and fade evenly, so that your not left with reddish or blueish effects like hers.

Getting permanent makeup done is understandably nerve racking, after all it is a tattooing process on your face, but when done by a well trained makeup artist with a good consultation process, it can reassure you. Always insist on a face to face consultation with your makeup artist so you can discuss your requirements. I always provide this free of charge. At this appointment the natural brow shape and colour are studied along with the overall shape of and structure of your face. As I am a fully qualified and practicing Dental Hygienist I am very familiar with working with facial structure. A template is drawn to agree the brow shape, which follows your natural brow, and pigments mixed to provide you with the shade to match your natural skin and hair colouring.

Permanent make up can be life changing in a positive way for so many people. People who can’t see to do their make up or have poor dexterity, cancer and alopecia patients who feel so self conscious, people who just want to save time and look good while on holiday, at the gym or swimming pool. Above is some of my work where I have created a natural brow from barely there sparse brows, corrected previously tattooed brows and also eyeliner to boost sparse eyelashes.

So please don’t be put off or nervous if you’re considering permanent makeup – if done professionally by a well trained artist who advises you on what would look best and what not to have done, and using the highest quality pigments – it can be life changing in a good way!!
