What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is hair loss. It can be partial or total hair loss, temporary or permanent depending on which type of Alopecia you have. It can affect your scalp or your entire body including eyebrows, eyelashes and nostril hair.
What causes Alopecia?
Causes can be hereditary, due to hormonal changes such as menopause, due to medical conditions or a normal part of ageing. Severe stress can possibly be a cause too.
What treatments are there?
Some treatments include steroid creams, scalp applications, steroid tablets or injections, ultraviolet light treatment, immunosuppressant tablets to mention but a few. Some improvements may only be temporary and most medications have side effects, so not all options appeal to everyone.
What else can be done?
It is quite common for men to suffer from Alopecia on their scalps and no one bats an eyelid, but when this happens to a woman, it can be distressing, especially if they have lost their eyebrows and eyelashes too. We cannot underestimate what a difference eyebrows make to our appearance, they frame our face.
Many people have fantastic wigs made, changing their style with more than one wig can be great fun! Men are able to have the appearance of hair follicles tattooed onto their scalps so that it looks like they’ve chosen to have that No. 1 clippered look instead of a baby smooth scalp.
So what about the eyebrows? That’s where I come in! As a Permanent Makeup Artist I get the most job satisfaction when I feel like I have made a difference to someone life, boosting their confidence and self esteem and saving them many hours of frustration trying to pencil brows on or stick on brows and getting them in the right place and even. Their reaction to having brows again can make my week!!
Permanent eyebrows can be a life changer!
When I see a client with no eyebrows for a consultation, I spend a lot of time getting to know what sort of brows they are hoping to have, or what they used to have, looking at photos, images and picking the perfect bespoke colour to suit their hair and skin type. I explain to them that I will spend quite a lot of time mapping and measuring out a ‘template’ so that their brows are in the perfect position and are the perfect size and shape. The client is involved throughout the process and eventually approves the template. I like to explain that the brows will probably seem bigger and bolder at first, this is because it takes a couple of weeks for the pigments to settle and fade down a little and healing is taking place. It is also the case that they may not have had brows for sometime and so it takes a little getting used to, this is why that at the first appointment I tend to ‘underdo’ the brows and ‘go lightly’, we can always add to them at the 6 weeks top up when they are used to them…. In fact, clients often want to go darker or bigger and have the eyeliner too to give the illusion of a lash line!
How are permanent eyebrows done?
This involves micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing. Pigment (ink) is inserted into the skin. Microblading can create the illusion of hairs and then a background pigment can be added using a tattoo machine to give a more 3D effect (like adding a little pencil), making your eyebrow look as natural as possible.
